Hard Questionposted on 12.29.2011Ask Your Hard Question

What if we have just found out our small group leader has been practicing some very ungodly behavior to the point of illegal. What should we as small group members do?

I believe that the basic pattern for your response should follow Matthew 18:15-17. If you have already addressed him or her as a small group, and there has been no repentance, then I would take the matter to your area leader along with your willingness to face the offender in a meeting that would include your group, the offender, and the area leader. If this does not bear fruit, then both your group and the area leader should take the matter to the Church leadership, beginning with your campus pastor, and then the elder board.

If the offender is clearly and intentionally engaged in felonious behavior for which you have evidence, then you may want to consult immediately with your area leader, campus pastor, and the board of elders. Without knowing the gravity of the situation, I am a bit reluctant to advise you to go directly to the civil authorities. This is something you will need to discern depending on your assessment of the urgency or immediate danger his or her behavior may pose to other persons. Even so, I would advise you to get the input of at least one trusted Church leader.

Blessings,

Arnie Gentile
