Hard Questionposted on 12.15.2011Ask Your Hard Question

Does the bible say anything about helping to choose your five year old children's friends when your unsure of their influence?

The Bible commands Christian parents to train their children in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6) and to raise them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). This is a very high calling, and will likely look different depending on the age and the maturity of the child. Nonetheless, as a parent, you have every right, in fact, I would call it your duty, to be fully engaged in your youngster’s socialization, and this would include evaluating his or her friendships for as long as the child is under your stewardship. This requires a delicate balance between law and grace, but in the end, you must have the final say. This is a challenge in today’s kid-centered world where even loving discipline is often frowned upon and indulgence is often the rule of the day. But it can be done with prayer and support within a loving church community. I would encourage you to seek supportive resources for parenting through our Pastoral Care, Children’s, and Adult Ministries.

Blessings,

Arnie Gentile
